Spring Cleaning: Clean First, Protect Second

Spring is the perfect time to give your home or office more than just a quick tidy-up.
A proper spring-cleaning routine gives you the opportunity to clean those areas that are often overlooked and start the new season with a fresher, healthier and better-maintained environment.

After months of dust, dirt, spills, foot traffic and everyday use, floors and hard surfaces can develop built-up grime that ordinary routine cleaning may not completely remove. Grout can become discoloured, bathrooms can develop mould and mildew, kitchen surfaces can accumulate grease, and high-traffic flooring can lose its clean, fresh appearance.

Whether you’re spring cleaning your home, office, retail space, rental property or commercial premises, the key is to work systematically and use the right cleaner for each surface.

What Is Spring Cleaning?

Spring cleaning is a more thorough cleaning routine designed to tackle areas that don’t necessarily receive attention during normal weekly cleaning.

Instead of simply vacuuming, mopping and wiping surfaces, spring cleaning allows you to:

  • Remove accumulated dirt and grime
  • Deep clean floors and hard surfaces
  • Clean grout lines
  • Remove soap and hard-water deposits
  • Tackle mould and mildew
  • Remove grease from kitchens
  • Clean difficult-to-reach areas
  • Clean doors, walls and other washable surfaces
  • Refresh outdoor areas
  • Identify areas that need repair, resealing or restoration
  • Create a cleaner and more organised environment

For offices, spring cleaning can also be an excellent opportunity to clean high-traffic areas, kitchens, bathrooms, reception areas and shared spaces that experience heavy daily use.

Once your floors and surfaces are properly clean you can proceed to accurately assess the condition of your surfaces.

Cleaning doesn’t replace sealing or restoration.

If a natural stone, cement, concrete or other suitable porous surface is showing signs that its protective treatment has worn down, consider whether it needs resealing after cleaning and complete drying.

FloorsHQ’s Stoneshield™ range includes cleaners as well as sealers and maintenance products for surfaces including concrete, cement, tile and natural stone.

A good spring-cleaning routine can therefore follow this simple process:

Clean → Inspect → Restore if necessary → Seal where appropriate → Maintain

This approach helps prevent the spring clean from becoming simply a once-a-year deep clean.

Download your relevant checklist below and use it as a practical guide for your home or office spring clean.

You can work through it room by room, or divide the checklist over several days.

Regular maintenance cleaning is important because dirt, dust, soap residue and hard-water deposits can gradually build up and make floors increasingly difficult to clean. Stoneshield™ Daily-Clean™ is designed for routine cleaning of surfaces including ceramic, porcelain, granite, marble, travertine, sandstone, slate, vinyl and sealed surfaces.

Spring Cleaning the Kitchen

The kitchen is one of the hardest-working areas in a home or office.

Grease, food spills, fingerprints and general grime can accumulate on floors, countertops, splashbacks, appliances and other surfaces.

For general cleaning around the kitchen, a suitable all-purpose cleaner can be useful. The Stoneshield™ Natural All-Purpose Cleaner is designed for grease, grime and general dirt and can be used on surfaces including floors, walls, glazed and unglazed ceramics, porcelain, granite, marble, travertine and slate.

For more demanding kitchen cleaning, use Stoneshield™ Deep-Clean™.

Deep Clean Your Bathroom

Bathrooms are another area where spring cleaning can make a noticeable difference.

Soap residue, hard-water deposits, mould and mildew can accumulate around showers, baths, tiles, grout and bathroom floors.

For regular tile and grout maintenance, Stoneshield™ offers a non-acidic grout cleaner designed to remove grease, grime, mould, mildew, soap deposits and dirt from grout joints.

Where mould and mildew have become a problem, a dedicated mould and mildew cleaner is preferable to simply wiping the surface. The Stoneshield™ range includes a fast-acting mould and mildew cleaner for bathrooms, walls and grout.

Don’t Forget the Grout

One of the easiest ways to make an older tiled area look cleaner is to give the grout some attention.

While the tiles themselves may look reasonably clean, dirty grout can make an entire floor or wall appear neglected.

During your spring clean:

  1. Remove loose dirt and dust.
  2. Apply an appropriate grout cleaner.
  3. Allow the product to work according to its instructions.
  4. Agitate stubborn areas where appropriate.
  5. Remove the loosened residue.
  6. Rinse or wipe as directed.
  7. Allow the grout to dry completely.
  8. Inspect the grout and consider whether sealing or restoration is required.

Don’t automatically use an aggressive cleaner simply because the grout is dirty. Choose a product appropriate for the grout and surrounding tile or stone.

Choose the Right Cleaner for the Job

One of the biggest mistakes during a deep clean is assuming that one cleaner should be used everywhere.

Different surfaces and different types of contamination require different approaches.

Spring Cleaning Tips for Better Results

  1. Clean from top to bottom – Start with high surfaces before cleaning floors. Otherwise, dust and debris will simply fall onto areas you’ve already cleaned.
  2. Remove loose dirt first – Vacuuming or sweeping before wet cleaning prevents loose dirt from being spread across the floor.
  3. Don’t use the strongest cleaner everywhere – A heavy-duty cleaner isn’t automatically better for routine maintenance. Match the cleaner to the surface and the type of contamination.
  4. Test unfamiliar surfaces – If you’re unsure how a cleaner will react with a particular surface, test it in a small inconspicuous area first and follow the product instructions.
  5. Don’t neglect grout – Clean tiles with dirty grout can still make a room look unclean.
  6. Pay attention to high-traffic areas – Entrances, hallways, kitchens and areas around desks often need more attention than low-traffic areas.
  7. Inspect after cleaning – Once dirt has been removed, it becomes much easier to identify stains, damaged surfaces, worn sealers or areas requiring restoration.
  8. Maintain rather than rescue – A thorough spring clean is valuable, but regular maintenance cleaning helps prevent heavy dirt accumulation in the first place. Stoneshield™ Daily-Clean™ is specifically intended for routine maintenance of a wide range of hard and sealed surfaces.
